What is adolescent therapy?
Adolescent therapy is counseling designed specifically for the teenage years — developmentally tuned to how young people actually think, feel, and communicate. It’s a space where a teen can be honest without being judged, and start to understand themselves a little better.
We support adolescents through things like:
- Anxiety and overwhelm
- Depression and low mood
- School stress and pressure to perform
- Social media, comparison, and self-esteem
- Bullying and friendship struggles
- Identity and figuring out who they are
- Family conflict and big changes like divorce or a move
- Grief and loss
Mental health challenges among young people have risen sharply — the NIH estimates that roughly 1 in 4 people aged 12–19 are facing a mental health challenge that would benefit from support. Reaching out early can make a real, lasting difference.
How we work with teens
Understanding our process
Our clinicians have deep experience with young people, and they meet teens where they are — never talking down to them.
Approaches built for teens
Depending on what your teen is working through, therapists draw on approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and DBT-based skills for managing big emotions — practical, age-appropriate, and genuinely useful day to day.
A space that's theirs
Teens are far more likely to open up when they feel safe and respected. We give them room to express themselves honestly, at their own pace.
Families in the loop
Parents and caregivers are part of the picture. We’ll talk with you about how you can support your teen when appropriate, while protecting the trust that makes their therapy work.
Benefits of adolescent therapy
The teenage years are hard enough without facing them alone. With steady, age-appropriate support, teens can feel more grounded and more like themselves — and the benefits often reach the whole family. A few of the ways adolescent therapy can help:
Feeling Heard
A space to be understood without judgment — often the first relief a struggling teen feels.
Emotional Tools
Practical skills to manage stress, big feelings, and hard moments at school and at home.
Steadier Confidence
Room to explore identity, build on strengths, and feel more sure of who they are.
Family Connection
Support that can ease conflict at home and help the whole family communicate better.
Signs your teen might need support
WHAT PARENTS OFTEN NOTICE
- Pulling away from family or friends
- Big shifts in mood, irritability, or anger
- Falling grades or losing interest in school
- Changes in sleep, appetite, or energy
- Dropping activities they used to love
- Seeming anxious, down, or "not themselves"
Frequently
Asked Questions
What ages do you work with?
We work with adolescents and teens roughly ages 12–19, with clinicians who specialize in this stage of life.
Will you tell me what my teen talks about in therapy?
Teens need a confidential space for therapy to really work, so the details of what your teen shares generally stay between them and their therapist. The clear exception is safety — if there’s any risk of harm to your teen or someone else, we’ll involve you right away.
At the start, your therapist will walk both you and your teen through exactly what’s kept private and what’s shared, and you’ll always get guidance on how to support them at home.
What if my teen doesn't want to go?
That’s very common. A free consultation can help, and our therapists are skilled at building rapport with reluctant teens so therapy doesn’t feel like a punishment.
